Brilliant performances throughout the cast, most notably the fierce and powerful Viola Davis and Alfred Enoch, elevate the personal narratives of the characters.ĭespite a much larger scale, this season fails to outshine the first as it ends up spreading itself too far and too thin. The writers manipulate the audience to empathise or at least understand the main characters’ motivations. With the moral grounds of right and wrong and truth and lies having blurred long back in the story, this season manages to elevate the dramatic stakes. The courtroom scenes become a little too detached from the reality despite the use of heavy jargons and powerful monologues, just like most fiction that takes place in a courtroom. The decision to take on one big case instead of multiple short courtroom trials like those in the previous season might be one of the contributing factors to this, too. While the show writers try their best to hold all the plots together, sometimes the narrative gets overloaded and difficult to follow. While the cast largely remains the same, we see a new addition in the form of Eve Rothlow (Famke Janssen), one of Annalise’s old college friends who is now defending the framed Nate. Meanwhile, mistrust and paranoia are tormenting the Keating 5 who are trying their best to preoccupy themselves with their own mystery hunts and secret love affairs. Compared to the flashforwards in season one, this is an even more impactful image for suspense building, with writers taking more risks knowing how the audience will respond. For Annalise and the Keating 5, it's the season of constantly shifting allegiances, hidden agendas, and betrayals are around every corner.Īt the heart of the events of this season is a devastating premise: Annalise Keating lying on the floor of a mansion, bleeding out to death. The time-jumping back and forth in the first half of the season that kept season 1 kinetic and breathless is back in the second season and the premiere wastes no time diving back into the fray. The previous season saw two murders that set the stage for an intense plot and season 2 builds up on it diligently.
This season tries its best to live up to the brilliant first season. 'How to Get Away With Murder' is back with a second season and this time the trials, hook-ups, betrayals, scandals, schemes, cover-ups, and of course, murders that makes up most Shonda Rhimes' addictive courtroom drama, are bigger and better.
